Eidul-fitr (Eid) festivities in Singapore are perceived to be largely isolated within the Malay community, with the public holiday even being termed Hari Raya Puasa. This Bazaar aims to challenge the popular opinion that Eid is a predominantly Malay celebration, amplifying instead the multi-cultural dimensions behind the occasion, where Muslims all over the world observe different customs during Eid. This diversity will be best exemplified through the cultural booths that will be set up, where infographics and paraphernalia relating to Eid across the world will be displayed. Further, art performances offered by the Indian and Chinese community, such as dances performed during Eid, will reinforce the Bazaar’s primary aim of reshaping the “Raya” narrative to one that is more inclusive of various cultural traditions within the Muslim community.

While we strive to re-envision Raya, to avoid completely alienating the Raya experience that most Singaporean Muslims are accustomed to, this Bazaar will consist of various booths that feature local F&B and entertainment businesses in a marketplace style reminiscent of Ramadan Bazaars. These domestic brands are not only steeped in local familiarity, offering a sense of comfort for Bazaar goers, but will also function as cultural markers for international students who might not know about Eid culture in Singapore.

Ultimately, this Bazaar initiative hopes to spearhead a novel method of celebrating Raya within NUS, appreciating long-standing traditions entrenched within our local Raya culture, while simultaneously provoking conversations about the transcendence of Raya beyond just an ethnic festivity, but rather a multi-cultural, shared experience that brings Muslims of different races, all over the world, together.
